New AI techniques help computers solve problems that people find easy but that computers have historically found difficult, such as image or voice recognition. The techniques discover hidden structures in data. When they work well, the results can be spectacular. But, when applied to problems people and computers find hard, like underwriting a large commercial lines account, the results can disappoint.
